The Coolest Garage Door Skins

Garage Door Skins

As I've mentioned before, upgrading your garage door can be a profitable DIY home improvement project, however you can also have a lot of fun by sticking a garage skin on the front of your garage door.

Applying a new skin to the front of your garage door is a lot cheaper than replacing the entire door - a new skin costs between $200 to $400 while replacing the entire door can easily cost over $1,000.

Although a garage door skin will breed new life into an old shabby garage door, I can't guarantee that it will necessarily increase the value of your home. That's because there are some unusual skins out there that not everyone will appreciate - for example I'm a vegetarian and I saw one skin which made the garage look like a cold room with animal carcasses hanging from the ceiling - that's not something I'd want to drive home to every day.

However, one of the great things about garage skins is that they are temporary and can either be removed entirely or replaced with a different skin - if you watch the demo video below you'll see how easy it is to install a skin over your garage door.

You don't have to use a skin which is as gaudy of some of the options shown here - you can also get ones which look like a regular garage, but where's the fun in that? I say that's too boring so I'm not going to show you any plain ones - just some of the more exciting, unusual, and downright cool skins I've seen.

So if your garage door is looking a little worse for wear, take a look at some of these skins that some people have installed and see if you find something to inspire you to give your garage a face-lift.

Single Door Garage Skins

I really like the ones that produce the TARDIS effect - that is they look bigger on the inside. This one was very cleverly done by painting the double lines on the driveway to match with the highway going off to the horizon. If you choose this one you might want to let visitors know about it in advance - just imagine someone accidentally driving straight into your garage door!

This next one shows you how the race car skin looks like when installed on a humble garage:

If you wished you lived in the countryside, then why not park your horse in the garage?

I love a good drop of the old vino - who wouldn't want to impress the neighbors with their very own wine cellar? You might need to remind guests that they still should bring a bottle to your dinner parties...

Tired of being annoyed by door-to-door sales people? Well just part a tank in your garage and place a note on your letter box saying sales people are unwelcome, and you might notice a sudden reduction in nuisance door knocks...

Double Door Garage Skins

This one is likely to cause passers by to do a double-take as they try to figure out how you managed to park your giant earth moving truck sideways in your double garage...

Another option is to park different things in either side of the garage - just make sure you fold in the wings of your jet fighter plane before reversing into the garage...

There are also options for those of you who have a double garage with a single door - where else would you park your elephant?

Triple Door Garage Skins

This one is my absolute favorite! Your house will be the talk of the neighborhood if you decide to park your jumbo jet in your triple garage!

As you can see, the sky's the limit when it comes to garage door skins.

You don't have to stick with the 'off the shelf' designs, if you have some artistic flare then you can create your own image and have that turned into a custom garage door.
