Decorate with Personalized Art

Example of a personalized portrait

Original paintings are a great way to add a touch of style to your home, but commissioning an artist to paint one for you can be a rather costly exercise.

One way of reducing the cost, which I used to do fairly regularly, is to scour yard sales for artwork that other people no longer value. I've had a lot of fun doing this, and I've found some great paintings in the process, but what do you do if you have a specific thing you would like a painting of like your house or maybe a portrait of your children for the grandparents?

I recently discovered a website from the UK which has a rather unique approach to commissioning artists. The website is Paint me a Present and they've found a way to make the process efficient and quite cost effective.

Here's how it works:

  1. You supply a photograph of what you would like to have painted
  2. Select an artist who's style you like from their list of in-house freelancers
  3. Choose the size for your painting and the type of frame you want
  4. Provide your payment and shipping details

Then you sit back and wait about 3 weeks for the painting to be delivered, either to your home or even to someone else as a gift.

The picture below illustrates how the various artists with different styles can take your photograph and then produce a professional original painting from it:

While browsing through the options on their website I found the opportunity to get a portrait of a person for £68, a pet for £41, and a landscape for £68. Those were for the small size of 12 x 16 inches, however you can get paintings in various sizes up to 28 x 36 inches.

Although your painting does come signed, the true identity of the artist remains anonymous. This is one of the key ways the price is kept down - it allows the artists to continue their regular work selling through the usual shops, markets, and galleries at higher prices while protecting their 'brand value'.

Just one last thing - although Paint me a Present does deliver outside the UK, I am interested to learn if anyone knows of a similar service in America - if you do then please send me a message.

UPDATE 30 Oct, 2013: I've been informed that Paint me a Present is planing to launch a service in the USA by the end of the year. They are currently looking for American artists, so if you are interested in taking part contact them via their website.
